Termite Activity: How To Identify The Signs

The most important step you can take to avoid termite damage is to find warning signs of a termite infestation on your property or inside your home. But, as we pointed out above, it can be challenging. Let's start by talking about termite identification.

Most people know what a termite worker looks like. It is a six-legged, pale-colored insect that resembles an ant. But are you aware that termite workers are only about 1/8 of an inch long? Even with excellent vision, it is hard to see the subtle physical traits that differentiate termites from ants. For this reason, Plymouth residents often mistake them for ants. If you pick up a stick in your yard and see white ants, we encourage you to stop and look closer, just in case.

You likely know it is possible to see flying termites around your property and that these winged termites are a warning sign of an infestation. But winged termites aren't much larger than worker termites. They are about 3/8 of an inch. So, even if you know that eastern subterranean swarmers are black insects with white wings, you may brush one off your leg while relaxing on your back porch and not think about it. We hope you don't do this. We hope you take the time to look closely to see if the tiny black insect has white wings stacked on each other or is a stretched teardrop shape.

From Bad To Worse: How Termite Damage Can Escalate Quickly

Termites don't pass through. They encroach upon your property. They build a nest and send out workers to find food. The colony grows and matures, and winged termites (swarmers) leave the nest, mate, and build new colonies. While only a fraction of the swarmers survive the process, it only takes a small number to increase termite problems significantly.

What does it mean when you see termite workers in your yard? It means a nest is close enough to send those workers out to collect food, but you cannot know the colony size or number of colonies. But, what you can know for sure is that the queen that sent those workers out won't go away. She will continue to create workers and grow her colony, and her nest will continue to send out winged termites to build new nests. The limiting factor is how much food the termites can find.

If your property has food, termite colony numbers can grow like a brush fire. When you see evidence of termites, it is definitely time to contact a pest management professional. There is no way to know how many termites or nests you have or how extensively they have damaged your home.

If you're in Plymouth, reach out to Combat Pest Control. We use the most trusted name in professional-grade termite control: Termidor®. The treatments we apply have a transfer effect. That means the termites take the product and share it with the other termites in the colony, which leads to colony elimination. Call or email to learn more.
